A freshman student is a person who will graduate from high school (or earn a GED) prior to enrolling at the UO and will not have attempted any credits at a college and/or a university after high school graduation (coursework started after high school graduation). Students applying to Product Design must submit an additional application via SlideRoom as well as submitting additional requirements directly to the program. Until your major is approved by the Product Design program, you will be coded as an Exploring major with a Professional Object of Product Design.

Students wishing to be considered for a major in the Music program must complete additional requirements for consideration including submitting to an audition for Music. Until your major is approved by the School of Music and Dance, you will be coded as an Exploring major with a Professional Object of Music.
You are required to submit answers to two prompts below describing your interest in selecting this major and to share examples of your creative work. Writing responses are essential to our evaluations of applicants as it is an important indicator of how you communicate your passions for design and your interest in our program.

You are also required to submit a Portfolio to be considered for admission to Architecture or Interior Architecture. It is required to submit a link to an electronic portfolio. The portfolio must be accessible to architecture faculty at the UO.


The Robert D. Clark Honors College (CHC) considers applications for students entering the University of Oregon for the Fall term. Students starting in a different term can start at the UO and then apply for lateral admissions through the Robert D. Clark Honors College. The deadline for consideration for the CHC is January 15.
Incoming freshmen students can apply to the Early Action pool if they submit their UO application for admission by November 1.

Curiosity and breadth of interests are defining characteristics of Clark Honors College students. We value originality and want to learn more about your unique journey and the nature and breadth of your intellectual curiosity. 

Note: applicants are required to submit the UO's application essay and the CHC application essay. The UO’s essay cannot be used to fulfill the Clark Honors College admission essay requirement.

Personal statement
Personal statement of 250 to 650 words on a topic (e.g. a meaningful story of your background, your identity, an interest, or a talent) that will add a unique voice to your application as well as demonstrate writing ability. Below is a list of possible topics.

1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, please share your story.
2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
4. Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma — anything of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could take to identify a solution.
5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

Within your portfolio (provide link), please provide 6 (six) images of works that, together, demonstrate your creativity. The quality of the media is the most important factor in our evaluation, but showing a variety of media is also helpful to show your breadth of creativity. Applicants are allowed/encouraged to submit any existing work or may choose to create new work. Regardless of the work you choose, please limit the submission to 6 pages. It is also acceptable to show 6 works on fewer pages.

Applicants must accompany each of the 6 images or works with a short description including:
  • Title (if any)
  • Media (eg. ceramics, iPhone photography, ball-point pen on paper)
  • Description or Relevant process notes (eg. “these sketches are from my sketchbook when I visited the State Capitol building,” or “this metal sculpture was made by slowly bending thick wire using tools in our school workshop.”)
  • Attributions of collaboration or tool support (eg. “I co-created this video with my friend Alison who chose the music and the costumes. I wrote the script, selected the scene locations, and shot the video.”)
